Gabrielle Kruger was born in 1993 in Cape Town, where she currently lives and works. After graduating summa cum laude from Stellenbosch University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BA) ) in 2015, she went on to be awarded her Masters in Fine Arts (MA) from Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2018.  In the same year, Kruger was awarded a Certificate of Excellence from the 33rd Chelsea International Fine Art Competition and participated in the collective exhibition at Agora Gallery, New York City, USA.

Kruger’s work is currently included in Matereality, a group exhibition at Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town, South Africa and was recently included in SMAC Gallery’s group presentation at the 2020 Investec Cape Town Art Fair in Cape town, South Africa. Solo exhibitions include; For Paint to Dry at SMAC Gallery in Stellenbosch, South Africa and Overgrowth at Marta Moriarty Art Window in  Madrid, Spain in 2019; a solo exhibition as part of the Selected Graduates Section at Turbine Art Fair in Johannesburg, South Africa as well as her Masters Graduate exhibition Undergrounding Landscapes at Michaelis School of Fine Art – University of Cape Town (UCT) in Cape Town, South Africa all in 2018.

Kruger has exhibited her works in numerous group exhibitions including SMAC Gallery’s presentation at FNB Art Joburg at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa; Unresolved Categories at Gallery MOMO in Cape Town, South Africa and The Female Line, at SMAC Gallery in Cape South Africa all in 2019; Intersection, along with Gabriel Tendai and Neo Matloga at Tyburn Gallery in London, UK; SS17 at Gallery MOMO in Cape Town, South Africa; What do Painters Do All Day at Banele Khoza Studio in Johannesburg, South Africa and Garden Smoothie, a collaborative exhibition with Marlene Steyn at SMAC Gallery in Stellenbosch, South Africa all in 2018; Lady Bush, at Cavalli Gallery in Cape Town; Growing Gatherings, a two-person exhibition with Kevin Frankental at 99 Loop Gallery in 2017 and Naturalis | Neo Exhibition, curated by Mia Louw and Nicola Kaden at Neo Venue Space in Bainskloof Pass, Wellington in 2017.

Kruger recently completed a residency at the Nirox Sculpture Park at the Cradle of Humankind in Johannesburg, South Africa. The residency culminated in a collaborative project between Kruger, The National School of the Arts and Nirox Foundation to present a ‘Painting Performance’ titled An African Adaptation of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. Kruger has since presented numerous ‘Painting Performance’s’ including Gucci Garden of Eden, curated by Elana Brundyn and Louw Kotze, performed by Students of the Cape Town Academy at the Norval Foundation in Cape Town, South Africa as well as arteBOTANICA, curated by Manthe Ribane and performed by students of The National School of the Arts at Nirox Sculpture Park in Johannesburg, South Africa all in 2019.

Upcoming exhibitions include a solo presentation at Marta Moriarty in Madrid, Spain in 2021; a collaborative presentation with Marlene Steyn at Lychee One Gallery in London, UK. 

Kruger’s work is currently included in the group exhibition Matereality, at Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town, South Africa. (14 .02 .20 – 2 .08 .20)
